Breeders of Top Quality KFPS Registered Friesian Horses

Horses have always had a place in our family’s life.  When Jack & Margaret Vanderkooy were raising their small children on the family dairy farm in rural Ontario, they kept a few registered Quarter Horses for riding and breeding.  Even though the family business later changed from farming to greenhouse operation and the horses were eventually sold, Jack maintained a keen interest in equines and always thought he might like to keep a team of draft horses for pleasure driving one day.

In 2005 while on a business trip to The Netherlands, Jack encountered the Friesian Horse for the first time and knew this was the horse for him.  A large driving horse with the lovely feathering of the draft breeds, yet this animal had a fine, noble head and a beautifully arched neck….and they were Dutch!  It didn’t take long for Jack’s family to also become enamoured with the horses, and especially his daughter Rachel found a new passion in this breed.

That passion and our love for The Friesian has grown by leaps and bounds over the years, and so has our herd!  Starting with two breeding mares in 2005, we now keep 7+ Star, Crown and Model broodmares and are currently raising many youngsters.  In 2010, our KFPS Approved breeding stallion, Tonjes 459 Sport, joined our farm and in 2012 we built a new 14-stall stable and riding arena. Then, in 2015, our dreams came true when our home-bred stallion Jakob KCF became the Approved stallion Julius 486!

All our horses are registered in the Friesch Paarden-Stamboek (KFPS), the oldest, largest & most reputable studbook of the Friesian horse.  We are members of the Ontario Friesian Horse Association (OFHA) and the Friesian Horse Association of North America (FHANA).  In addition, Jack has been a member of FHANA’s Board of Directors since 2009.  In 2013, Jack was elected President of the OFHA.
